A Forecasting Platform User Earned $436K on Bets on Venezuela's Political Shift.
A bettor profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was made public, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the event.
Changing Odds in Predictions
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month rose in the time leading up to President Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the president had been seized.
A particular user, which joined the platform last month and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a modest bet of over $32,000.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Market Signals Before Public Statement
Trading information shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.
But the market's assessment had jumped to 11% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the morning of Saturday, indicating a sudden change in market sentiment just before the official statement was made.
"That trade has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on non-public details," said an industry expert.
A small number of other traders also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.
Political Attention Grows
Politicians are starting to take note.
A bill introduced on recently aims to prohibit government employees from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.
Industry Context
Prediction markets have grown significantly in the past few years, with users able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.
This sector faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. However it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.
Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the event betting space.
A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
