Correctional Facilities Won't Be Fixed Immediately, Government Official States, while Police Search For Two Men Mistakenly Released
Shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick has labeled the circumstances as a "total mess," commenting earlier today.
Appearing on a radio program, he pointed to remarks made by David Lammy after a previous prisoner release, stating that the minister would implement stricter verifications.
"There was a delay of almost a week for the prison service reportedly to realize this occurred" and notify the authorities, Jenrick explains, "leaving them a week late in the manhunt to locate him."
The shadow minister criticises the minister's handling during yesterday's PMQs and accuses him of a "complete failure in responsibility."
Speaking about incorrect inmate discharges more generally, the spokesperson underlines that "each accidental release [...] is unacceptable."
He acknowledges there were such releases under the former Conservative government, but says the figure "has increased dramatically" under the current government.
Advocating more prisons to be constructed, he continues: "The public expect now are proper checks put in place."
"This represents a particular administrative failure by the Ministry of Justice overseen by the minister," Jenrick says.
