Fury Erupts as Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Spurs Widespread Rebuke
Individuals from both sides of the political spectrum and the Hollywood world are uniting to censure Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the tragic passing of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Online Statement
After the couple were found deceased at their Los Angeles home, Trump took to his platform to label the late director as "tortured and struggling". In a post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the hostility he caused others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Arrest
Authorities have since confirmed the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in connection with the case. It is reported his bail was set at a significant sum.
A Torrent of Condemnation from Public Figures
The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.
This is a appalling and despicable comment,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, similarly criticized the remarks. She referenced previous comments from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Do you have no shame? Can you get any worse?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a sick man."
Mirroring this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just lost it. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
Rebuke from Within Party
A number of GOP lawmakers also expressed dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also alluded to challenges with addiction and mental health some families face.
Fellow GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly dared members in his political party to defend the statements.
The Director's History and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a past interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.
"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and denounced violence for political ends without reservation after the shooting of another individual.
A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" while posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
