Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks
NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this week, reacting to recent comments from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared on X. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."
Wilson's response directly referenced the notorious bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the league determined that the Saints had incentivized players for making hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the NFL for one season.
What Sparked the Recent Dispute
Wilson's reaction came after Payton made remarks after Denver's remarkable comeback win over the Giants. Payton remarked that the team had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Moreover, Payton implied that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened well after our game,'" the coach stated.
Background of the Wilson-Payton Partnership
- Wilson was traded to the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245M contract.
- The Broncos went 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season before the team brought in Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a stint in broadcasting.
- The coach replaced Wilson late into the 2023 season, a move that prevented the quarterback from suffering an injury.
If Wilson stayed on the team by spring 2024, his $37M pay for 2025 would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly split between the quarterback and his coach.
