More than two dozen Olympic champions, coaches and other international athletes have endorsed a appeal urging a stop to the capital punishment of a boxing champion and coach, who is on death row in the nation.

Escalating Worldwide Condemnation

During growing international outrage over the country's expanding employment of capital punishment as a tool of oppression, the strongly worded letter denounces the Iranian regime's verdict to uphold the death sentence of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

The athlete, three decades old, from the city in north-east Iran, was detained for taking part in national uprisings in the year 2019 and indicted of backing an resistance movement. He has endured half a decade in detention, where he has been abused and held in isolation.

“Sport is designed to encourage optimism, togetherness, and bravery,” the signatories wrote. “The execution of a titleholder for his political views is a direct assault on these principles and a caution to every athlete who ventures to voice opinions.

History of Killing Athletes

The letter noted that the athlete's case was part of a pattern and underscored Iran’s record of sentencing to death competitors for their views, including a football captain, leader of the national football team, and a volleyball captain, captain of the female volleyball side. In two thousand twenty, a wrestling champion, a 27-year-old Iranian competitor, faced the death penalty.

Additional signatories to the statement comprise Tracy Edwards, who skippered the first all-female crew in a global yacht race and was the first woman to be awarded a renowned sailing award; the previous captain of the soccer side an athlete; and a footballer, who was in the national team for the global tournament.

Detention and Unjust Proceedings

Vafaei Sani was taken into custody in early 2020. The allegations against him entailed “promoting decay on Earth through fire-setting and ruin of government belongings”. His ruling has been annulled multiple times but on the fourth of October it was confirmed on the third attempt. His court case was condemned as “highly unjust” by human rights activists and organizations.

Appeal to International Body

The call to halt Vafaei Sani’s death sentence is subsequent to a previous statement to the United Nations official for rights, signed by over 100 human rights experts and groups, demanding action to prevent the sports figure's capital punishment.

Execution Crisis

According to reports, there is an “execution crisis in the country, which has achieved horrific proportions”. In the year 2023, the government put to death at least over 850 people – a 48% increase on 2022. Last year, records showed nine hundred seventy-two deaths, constituting the maximum count since 2015.
